The Houston Negro Hospital: Book Talk

FREE: NO TICKET NEDED
As part of Juneteenth week and the centennial commemoration of Houston Negro Hospital, join Emmy Award-winning journalist and author Carlton Houston for a powerful evening of storytelling, history, and discovery.
Through rare photographs, personal family archives, and years of research, Houston uncovers the remarkable story of Houston Negro Hospital, the institution that would later become Riverside General Hospital. Dedicated on Juneteenth in 1926, the hospital stood as a beacon of hope, dignity, and healthcare access for Black Houstonians during segregation.
This immersive visual presentation brings to life the doctors, nurses, community leaders, oilmen, and everyday citizens who helped build and sustain one of Texas’ most important Black institutions. Along the way, Houston shares surprising personal discoveries, including photographs and stories that had never before been seen by members of his own family.
The evening will also offer an exclusive preview of Houston’s forthcoming book:
The Houston Negro Hospital: The Untold Legacy of Riverside General
More than a book talk, this is a journey through memory, resilience, community, and the enduring legacy of a hospital that helped shape Black Houston.
